More Interesting Details About TheCelestina Warbeck And The Banshees
Warbeck ‘s performances — along with the theatrical exploits of a puppet troupe on stage — are part of Universal Orlando ‘s technique that draws on seven “Potter” books and eight blockbuster films. The theory is that even though Harry isn’t there, the Wizard World keeps turning. And you’re in there, too. The actions take place on a stage built into a wide stairway and false storefront of the Carkitt Market Park, another Diagon Alley spot not featured in the fiction but called by Rowling at Universal ‘s request. Visitors have a lounge on the stairs that lead to the performance area when it is not used for dramatic purposes. The show is billed as Celestina Warbeck, the singing sorceress, and the Banshees. The theme is retro-chic, a lead singer in bejeweled gown with three backups in elegant, coordinating teal suits. They have golden microphone stands they use as props. In the Universal plot, Celestina is making a special appearance for the Wizarding Wireless Network at Diagon Alley. “This isn’t her normal show. It’s probably going to be two hours, three hours long,” says Lora Wallace, director of the show. “This is more like she just appeared for a one-time performance.” Celestina and her songs remind me of a past era — a diva sandwiched somewhere between Motown and Big Band, or maybe the early days of TV variety shows. “I think it’s based on a lot of real performers,” Wallace says. “Many of the era, or even of the more recent era.” Show director Patrick Braillard said, “We heard the J.K. based Celestina off Shirley Bassey, so there are bits and parts of Shirley Bassey, but there’s also Lena Horne, Bette Midler …” Still, Celestina is a mystery to other visitors to the park. “That’s cool. It’s all about the production of Celestina,” Wallace says. “You ‘re going to enjoy her as she plays her first song, whether you know it or not — you know someone like her.” Universal designed the series practically from scratch. “There is very little source content for Celestina,” Wallace notes. “She’s listed in Mrs. Weasley ‘s movie at a picnic. She appears in the background. She’s listed in the books once or twice.” Songs like “You Stole My Cauldron But You Can’t Have My Heart” were produced by Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary, the masterminds behind Broadway’s “First Date.” “There are four song titles and two lyrical lines” to work with, Braillard says. “Michael and Alan did a great job, lyrically taking as much of the books as they could.” Reference:
